Benefits of Yoga
When using Yoga as part of a physiotherapy intervention Asanas are selected carefully based on the patient’s injury and recovery needs. A program is customized that includes different styles of Yoga. Relaxation and meditation practice is a strong pillar of our Yoga Therapy sessions. Research has found that gentle movements of Yoga and the breathing exercises of Pranayama are beneficial in many Musculo-skeletal conditions.
Few studies have also found that meditation practice has the potential to change how the brain works. A good relaxation / meditation practice results in increased use of prefrontal cortex which helps to form newer neural pathways. It also leads to a decreased unpleasant response in the amygdala in response to stressors.
Yoga is an ancient science.
During these ancient times yoga was not an accessible practice. People would leave their families and society to perform austerities and to achieve self realisation.
In the late 1800’s there was a yogi Tirumalai Krishnamacharya who’s guru asked him to go back into society and share the knowledge of yoga with the common people. That’s when Krishnamacharya found that people would not be able to progress on the path of spirituality if they were struggling with physical ailments.’
This is when it was also found that the practice of asanas, pranayamas and dhyana helped to keep the body and mind healthy and ward off illnesses.
In 1980s, Dr. Dean Ornish re-introduced yoga to North America as a form of therapy. He studied the effects yoga on heart disease. His study showed that yoga, meditation and diet could reverse lifestyle diseases. By 1990, this program was approved for health insurance coverage, making yoga therapy a part of medical procedures.
